Part 1: Digital Drawings

Memorias de Nuestro Barrio, which translates to "Memories of Our Neighborhood," is a collaborative mural designed to preserve the history and stories of the residents of Málaga's gentrifying Cruz Verde-Lagunillas neighborhood. In partnership with INCIDE, seniors participating in their memory workshops helped to design and paint the mural.

Step 1: Coming up with the idea!

The first step in any project is to generate an idea. This idea emerged during a mural walking tour with a group of seniors from the Cruz-Verde-Lagunillas neighborhood. As we walked through the neighborhood and admired the murals, the seniors shared stories about the area and their childhood memories. They also spoke about the significant changes the neighborhood has undergone and continues to undergo. They mentioned stores they used to frequent, neighborhood festivals they used to have, and neighbors they used to see but no longer do. To preserve their stories and the neighborhood's history, we came up with the idea of a collaborative mural to commemorate the neighborhood's past.

Step 2: Designing the Mural

During two workshops, we facilitated creative ideation activities to help the seniors design the mural. Find lesson plans and these activities here. Using the drawings created by the seniors, we combined the designs to create the mural's final design. The final sketch was created on Procreate. Before the final draft, the seniors reviewed it and offered their opinions and suggestions.

Step 3: Prep for Painting

Before we started painting, we prepared the paint. Using Procreate, we created a color guide that helped us buy and mix the paint we needed. Once all the paint was bought and mixed, we prepped the wall. We used masking tape to grid the mural and hand-drew all the elements.

Step 4: Painting

Once the wall was prepped and the outline drawn, we started the best part: painting! Because of the level of detail and the winter break, this mural took us about two months to complete.
